DOUGLAS COUNTY PLANNING COMMISSIONER TO
SPEAK AT FLORENCE COMMUNITY INFORMATION MEETING

NEWS RELEASE:

Florence, Oregon - People Against a Casino Town (PACT), the grass-roots organization opposing a casino in Florence, announced they will be holding a Community Information Meeting for the residents of Florence on March  16 at 7:00 pm at the Florence Events Center.

Susie Dewberry, spokesperson for PACT, said "Our guest speaker will be Douglas County Planning Commission Chairman, David Jaques.  We invited Mr. Jaques to speak because of his first-hand experience with a casino in Douglas County.  His knowledge about the effects of a casino on communities should be of great interest to the residents of Florence."

"People in Florence are upset, they're worried, and we want to let them know that we're still fighting and it's not a 'done deal.'" said Dewberry, "We'll  also be telling everyone about the latest progress in our legal strategy.   The basic issue is very simple, the Oregon Constitution prohibits casinos.  We've filed another lawsuit against Governor Kulongoski in Lane County Circuit Court, and we expect more in the future.  We intend to do whatever it takes to keep a casino out of Florence."

The most recent lawsuit also names the Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians as defendants.  According to Dewberry, that step was taken reluctantly, "We believe the Governor has violated his promise to uphold the
Oregon Constitution.  We tried to leave the Confederated Tribe's out of the legal battle, but the Governor insisted we include the Tribes in the lawsuit. In our view, the Tribes have nothing to do with what powers the Governor has or doesn't have."

The public meeting will be held Tuesday evening, March 16, at 7:00 pm, in the Florence Events Center.
